Difference Between Hits and Files

Could you explain the difference between an entry for a hit and an entry for a file. For example the hits on the URL for an MP3 uploaded on Monday show as 1263, but the number of entries on the files column for Monday shows as 265. Understanding the difference will obviously give me a far greater understanding of the reach of my podcast.

Here's a good User Guide to Webalizer, the reporting package that we use for S3stat:

In the context of Amazon's logs, a "Hit" is recorded every time a file is accessed, be it from your website, a spider, or any other source.

"Files" don't really map to cloud storage, so you might be better off simply ignoring them.
