Can you explain what a "hit" is exactly

Hey guys,

I am really enjoying your metrics as it has allowed to me assess which files I should work on optimizing.

One looming question I have is within the stats, what justifies a "hit". The reason I ask is because the hits that your stats are reporting are far greater than any stats I am keeping elsewhere (with Analytics, or with the CMS counters in general). How is a hit determined? Is it every time the file is accessed? Does it include when spiders crawl it?

Thanks for your help
Robert

Here's a good User Guide to Webalizer, the reporting package that we use for S3stat:

In the context of Amazon's logs, a "Hit" is recorded every time a file is accessed, be it from your website, a spider, or any other source. As such, it's not surprising that the numbers reported would be a bit higher than your internal reports, since there are other traffic sources that you're not likely to be measuring.
